Mego Action Figures

Mego was a toy company of little note when Martin Abrams became president in 1971. One of the first things he did was to license a number of comic book characters from the two major publishers of the time - Marvel and DC - and begin producing action figures based on these kid-favorites.

Mego leaped from being a toy company no had heard of, to practically the top of the heap overnight. Their 8" line of figures, encompassing a number of different colorful superheroes, sold terrifically well to kids who were eager to recreate their favorite comic-book battles. And the size - at a time when most action figures were nearly a foot tall - made sure the toys were big enough for more imaginative play, but just small enough that figures could be given such accessories as hideouts, vehicles, etc.

The line continued to expand throughout the 1970's, as Mego expanded their base of licensees to include such properties as the Planet of the Apes TV series and even the cinematic classic Wizard of Oz. Boxer Muhammed Ali was the subject of his own small line of figures, as were such generic (but to kids exciting) subjects as Western characters, pirates, Robin Hood and a handful of his Merry Men, and even a number of prehistoric men and beasts.

Today, Mego stands as one of the most collectable companies, since their action figure characters span the gamut of comic books and fantasy fiction. Mego's diverse and manageable plethora of items keeps collectors buzzing, chasing down their childhood favorites and bidding furiously against one another for the highest-quality surviving examples.
