Arcade Games - Video Games, Pinball, and Mechanical Games

It's hard for younger people to imagine now, but there was a time when video games for the home just didn't exist. Kids or adults who wanted this type of arcade gaming thrill were forced to trudge down to their local arcade for their entertainment. Today, video games can be played just about anywhere. Not that anybody minded, because the arcade represented a wonderland of imagination and colorful fun. And there was even a time when pinball machines could be found here and there out in the wild, to add a touch of enjoyment to otherwise dreary places like laundromats or the grocery store. And when the earliest big-name video games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders broke into the public consciousness, it seemed as though they were starting to pop up everywhere.

Some older folks (ahem) remember the days before video gaming, when electro-mechanical game machines ruled. Although today these games might seem primitive or very limited in play (a charge not uncompletely without merit), kids of the time were absolutely thrilled by them. We were fascinated, for example, to see the little metal characters pop up in a shooting gallery, or watch the landscape go by below a backlit plastic sky in a flying game. In some ways these games more closely resembled toys in that their parts were actual, physical little objects, as opposed to the completely digital items of today.

Pinball has always stood apart in the gaming world as a unique entity: there's really no other type of game like it, and most people either love it, or they don't; but, given the opportunity, practically anyone can stand at the tables and enjoy themselves immensely. The concept is simple enough that even the smallest kids - assuming they're tall enough to see down into the glass top, or are held up by an obliging adult - can grasp the concept of the game, instantly.

Video games have changed the world of entertainment, and rightly so: as the technology has progressed, games have become more complex and challenging, but also more photo-realistic in the depictions of their subjects, whether military first-person shooters or the most far-out alien worlds. The earliest video games were rather primitive - and there's hardly a more primitive game than Pong - but they were no less loved for that. Anyone who was young at that time has their own favorite game, and although the graphics may have been somewhat basic, who cannot look back fondly upon such classics as Gauntlet, Elevator Action, or Xevious?

Along with this love of the machines comes the desire for contemporary grownups to want to own some of the great games of their youth. (Why, the person typing this sentence has both a Gauntlet and a Bally Wizard pinball in his own kitchen.... ) While some of the most rare or in-demand games can command impressive prices, the truth is that even some of the classic arcade games can still be found for sale at prices below that of a new big-screen TV.

The collectibles category of 'arcade games' is relatively young - this particular hobby is still very much in its infancy, as desirable game cabinets still sit languishing in warehouses and garages all across the country. But it will only be a matter of time before prices on the best and rarest items start to go into the stratosphere. For those interested in these fantastic machines, the time to buy is now while the supply-demand equation still favors those with the cash.

Keep checking back as we keep adding more machines and information in the near future.
